Years back I had the best mechanic.
His personal motto was…
If it ain’t broke don’t fix it.
He was a refreshing change of pace to the stereotype mechanics I was used to working with.
Other mechanics would always find a few things with my car that needed to be repaired or upgraded.
It seemed like every visit to the mechanic for an oil change resulted in hundreds or thousands of dollars being spent.
My new mechanic was refreshing change.
He’d tell me what was going on with my vehicle and what needed attention.
The interesting thing was that most of the time he recommended that I leave things alone.
The net result was a car that ran very well for a very long time.
And the cost of ownership wasn’t too bad either.
When it comes to the tech in your business things can be a little different.
I met with a client the other day who said he lived by the motto of - if it ain’t broke don’t fix it.
The net result was that he was running on a 10 year-old server.
The server had no warranty and it was crawling along.
Computers don’t age well.
Unfortunately the core components of a computer degrade over time.
It's important to note that just because a server is up and running - doesn’t mean that it’s running fine.
Over time computer performance degrades.
And computers need to be replaced.
So even though the server is being maintained as best as possible.
It’s still hurtin’.
If that server goes down he’s in big trouble.
Because there's no warranty.
His business could be down for days.
When it comes to servers the motto of the day is…
Even If it ain’t broke - replace it.
