There’s a lot of buzz in the Manage Service Provider industry about security.
It’s been going on for a few years and now it’s finally starting to take some shape.
Companies that formerly called themselves Managed Service Providers or MSP’s are quickly changing their tune and re-casting themselves as Managed Security Service Providers or MSSP’s.
Here’s my take.
Managed Service Providers are struggling to get clients.
Managed Service Providers are struggling to keep clients.
Add to that, there’s been an industry put push towards security for the last few years and the marketing is working.
Managed Service Providers have bought into the hype that security is the next big thing to sell to businesses.
And finally, and most important of them all…
It’s a new bright shiny object and one of the most potent drugs for an IT guy.
IT guys love security.
Security to an IT guy is like crack.
It feeds every behavior and emotion in their being.
They can’t quit security if they wanted to.
And so with the industry behind behind them.
With their minds firmly convinced that security is the next bastion.
Managed Service Provider companies are making the jump.
Their hope is that the fear that’s broadcasted to you every day in the news and other media channels will be the catalyst that makes you to sign up for their managed security services.
Just to be clear - I’m not downplaying the importance of security.
I’m just highlighting the vulnerabilities of a geek and people who embrace fear as a key motivator.
My message to Managed Service Providers everywhere is this.
Don’t buy the hype.
Build a better business.
Hanging your hat on fear uncertainty and doubt is no way to run a business.
I’ll give it a few years.
This thing is going to shake out
